Press Release

Join Mountain Stage as our city becomes a work of art during FestivALL Charleston. The capitol city turns into a creative hotbed during FestivALL, June 15-24, 2018.

The Wood Brothers, who released “One Drop of Truth” in February, will return for their third appearance on Mountain Stage on June 24. Also, just announced, our favorite bare-foot and folk-singing hippie, author and jam band singer Todd Snider will return to Mountain Stage as well. By our best estimate, this will make Todd's 15th appearance on the show since 1995.

We’re excited to announce that singer, songwriter and guitarist Peter Mulvey will be stepping up to the microphone as our special guest-host. Mulvey has a recurring gig at the National Youth Science Camp, located in West Virginia, which led to a spoken word piece, “Vlad the Astrophysicist”, which became aTEDx talk, and then an illustrated book. Mulvey performed “Vlad” when he made his most recent appearance on Mountain Stage last September in Morgantown, WV.

Roots music legends, Dave Alvin and Jimmie Dale Gilmore, have been friends for 30 years, but only recently realized they had never played music with each other before.  So in 2017, Grammy winner Alvin and Grammy nominee Gilmore, decided to hit the highway to swap songs, tell stories, and share their life experiences.

Though Texas born Gilmore was twice named Country Artist of the Year by Rolling Stone, and California native Alvin first came to fame in the hard rocking rhythm and blues band The Blasters, they discovered that their musical roots in old blues and folk music are exactly the same.  In these spontaneous shows, audiences enjoyed classic original compositions from the two, and also songs from a wide spectrum of songwriters and styles - from Merle Haggard to Sam Cooke to the Young Bloods.

Mutually energized and inspired by these performances, Dave and Jimmie agreed to hit the road again in 2018…this time with a full band and some new stories to share.

Kat Wright, whose voice is both sultry and dynamic, delicate yet powerful; gritty but highly emotive and nuanced, has been described as “a young Bonnie Raitt meets Amy Winehouse”. Add to that voice enough stage presence to tame lions, and the combination of feline femininity proves immediately enchanting. There’s soul flowing in and out of her rock ‘n’ roll with a serpentine seduction. Some of soul music’s sweet, grand dames belt, shout, seethe, and succumb, while Wright sings gently like a heartache’s apology. It’s funky in spots and beautiful all over. And it hurts a little … like it should.

More artists will be added in the coming weeks.

This episode will be scheduled for distribution via NPR Music later this year.
