Squirrel Nut Zippers - With heroes like Billie Holliday, Cab Calloway and Duke Ellington, North Carolina’s Squirrel Nut Zippers were one of the more unlikely groups to become "mainstream." But in 1997, "Hell," the group’s sophomore release, outsold discs by both U2 and Aerosmith. Once described as "'30s punk," the band continues to center around the vocals of Katherine Whalen and wily frontman Jimbo Mathus, as well as original members Chris Phillips, Je Widenhouse and Stuart Cole. Since 2002, the members have pursued a number of solo projects. Whalen released several solo albums; Mathus issued several solo discs while serving as musical director for bluesman Buddy Guy; Phillips was enlisted as composer for the Comedy Central TV show "Lil’ Bush"; Widenhouse has performed throughout the country with his trad jazz combo the Firecracker Jazz Band; and Cool wrote "Dancing to Morocco," a travel guide of dark and dusty bars in Northern Africa and has performed with Dexter Romweber. The Zippers’ music has been featured in the soundtracks from "Blast From the Past" and "Flirting With Disaster," as well as HBO’s "Six Feet Under."

Southern Culture on the Skids - Undoubtedly one of the most fun, diverse and deceptively accomplished indie bands, Southern Culture on the Skids was founded in 1985 by guitarist/singer Rick Miller in Chapel Hill, NC. In 1987, Mary Huff and Dave Hartman joined the lineup which has been intact for more than two decades. Through constant touring, inventive stage shows (that, early on, included the fried interactive chicken favorite, "Eight Piece Box") and sets that ping-ponged from roots rock and country to trash-rock and retro surf tunes, the band became college faves. In 1995, SCOTS signed briefly to Geffen Records and released "Dirt Track Date" and "Plastic Seat Sweat." The band released the live "Doublewide and Live" in 2006, followed by a collection of covers called "Countrypolitan Favorites" in 2007. HBO has featured the tracks "Soulful Garage" and "It's All Over But The Shoutin'" on its "True Blood!" show and none other than Stephen King listed "Countrypolitan Favorites" as one of his top seven albums of `07.

The Coal Men - Led by singer/guitarist/songwriter Dave Coalman, Nashville’s The Coal Men has championed roots Americana for the last decade. The band’s recipe is simple but timeless: great songs, great playing, great singing - and all done with conviction. A song from the group’s third release, "Kids With Songs," has been featured in the Discovery Channel’s "Deadliest Catch."

These United States- Combining Devendra Banhart's "new weird American" eccentricity, Flaming Lips-influenced electronic bells and whistles, and a Wilco-esque twanginess, the Louisville-based These United States creates a musical melting pot that blends driving pop music with pastoral textures. The group’s third release is titled "Crimes."

Grace Pettis, Mountain Stage NewSong Contest Winner
 – Songwriter Grace Pettis, based out of Austin, TX, was chosen from the five co-winners of the 2009 Mountain Stage NewSong Competition to perform on Mountain Stage. Pettis' self-titled CD was released in October 2009.
