Experience Charleston, West Virginia

We love where we live and work, and we think you will too.

Almost Heaven…Charleston, West Virginia, is steeped in historic architecture, an eclectic music scene far beyond the offerings of Mountain Stage, plenty of tasty eateries, and interesting storefronts. All of that on top of four seasons of changing mountain landscape. The capital city serves as the gateway to all that is wild and wonderful in the Mountain State, including snow skiing, world-class zip-line canopy tours, whitewater rafting, ATV trails, golfing, hiking, fishing, rock climbing, mountain biking, canoeing, and kayaking – all within an hour’s drive or less.

Come for a live show, but be sure to check out what our friends have to offer while you’re here.

FAQ

When we say we love this town, we really mean it. You’ll know what we mean when you get here. We typically record live shows on Sunday evenings. Many travelers procure tickets for a specific live taping of Mountain Stage and then make plans to come early and enjoy the charms of a long weekend. Why not, right? After all, two-thirds of the US population is within a days drive from West Virginia. Don’t you think it’s time you planned your West Virginia getaway?

Local Arts

The capital city may be small in comparison to other cities, but don’t let our size fool you. Charleston is a place that values its arts community. Mountain Stage works closely with our friends at FestivALL Charleston, an arts organization that serves its community with year-round events and programs. In addition, we are proud to partner with the West Virginia Music Hall of Fame on educational outreach through their mentoring program in public schools. Be sure to visit the WVMHoF’s exhibit currently on display in the Charleston Town Center. You may even see some familiar faces on the walls. Spoiler: Our original host (for 38 years), artistic director and founder of the show Larry Groce was inducted into the WVMHoF class of 2020!

Where To Eat

Our team takes food very seriously. We celebrate (and recap) every live show the following Monday with what we like to call Victory Lunch. Victory Lunch has taken us to many spots around town so our palette is seasoned. We’re here to tell you that treating yourself to what the local food scene has to offer is a must! You can keep is simple with a big fish sandwich from The Seafood Co. at Capitol Market, or take it up a notch with the thoughtfully crafted Appalachian entrees and cocktails at 1010 Bridge. And Sam’s Uptown Café and Adelphia are always a best bet for late night post show food. If BBQ is your thing you’ll want to make a trip over to Dem 2 Brothers and a Grill…trust us.

Where To Shop

If cool independent bookstores, cozy cafés and surprising art galleries are your thing, you’re going to want to visit the Charleston institution that is Taylor Books. The floors squeak in all the right places and the original tin ceilings add to its charm. Be sure to make a stop in Elk City located on Charleston’s West Side. There you’ll find our favorite letterpress shop, Base Camp Printing Co. – they are the fine folks who make all our live show posters. Pop into Kin Ship Goods for all things screen-printed and cozy before pilfering through the never-ending stacks of records at Elk City Records. Here, shopping small is easy.
